Scars Make Your Body More Interesting
|
A long long time ago in a place far away, something like Ohio in 1975, I read this book by Sherril Jaffe called “Scars Make Your Body More Interesting.” The stories were fun and interesting to read, but it was the title that really stuck in my head. This title made scars interesting. And it made me think about my scars and how I got them and how they each had a story to tell. So almost 40 years later the title is still in my head and coming out in my metal work.

A lot of my work falls into this category/body of work.
I think of scars being interesting as the story they tell about your life, nobody escapes without some scar in some form. How we try to cover them up with clothing and make-up and ointments... how we may think of them as ugly. Traditional cultures around the world use scarring as a body modification. It can represent strength, fortitude, & courage, as well as beauty... Maybe it's mainly here in the US that people have a perfect vision/stereotype of what is beautiful... and that follows into other body adornment, jewelry, refined jewelry, diamonds, gold, rubies... I find myself more attracted to the rougher, tell me a story kind of adornment... |
