Behind the Brooch: A Closer Look at Backs, Catches, and Pin Stems
by Lorena Angulo The focus of this book is on the side of the brooch that usually isn't noticed: the reverse. When we encounter an attractive piece of jewelry, our instinct is to admire the front, but when we turn it around, it often reveals a secret. The author lets us in on that secret, typically only shared between the maker and the wearer. The result is a better understanding of the artist's abilities and personality. Now, you can judge for yourself what the 128 artists respresented in this volume had in mind. My work is featured on pages 60 and 61. |
In 2012 the Center for Metal Arts partnered with Charles Lewton-Brain to launch the inaugural Lewton-Brain Foldform Competition, to recognize the experimental work being done using the techniques of foldforming across art disciplines, and to create a benchmark survey of how this innovative sheet-forming technique has evolved in thirty years since Lewton-Brain first investigated it in a New Paltz grad school studio. The hundreds of entries from three continents suggested that jewelers who construct with foldforming techniques are moving into more sophisticated and less obvious uses of the folded forms, and demonstrated that this technique is now being explored in related disciplines of sculpture and functional objets d’art with astonishing results.
