The spiral is deeply embedded in all of nature. From a scientific point of view, it is fundamental to the structure of many life forms: plants, seashells, the human body, atomic elements, microscopic DNA, and the spiraling orbits of planets and galaxies. Both the spiral and the circle occur in nature as well as in art, myth and sacred tradition. The earliest known use of these shapes was in the Paleolithic age (c.25,000-20,00BC), when they were carved into bone or stone or painted on cave walls.
Beginning with a single dot, the spiral develops from the initial seed and moves forwards in a clockwise or anticlockwise direction; so it is connected with movement, energy and growth. It is linked with the symbolism of the moon and with cyclic development, resurrection and renewal.
Forged and patinated copper bangle; forged copper wire formed into spirals, and torch-fired with vitreous enamels; attached with fused 16 gauge jump rings. The bangle is blackened with a liver of sulphur patina and polished with jewelry wax.
