This necklace is from my Personal Icon Series
I grew up Greek and that meant going to church on Sundays surrounded and immersed by icons and saints. When I was I older I was equally attracted to Andy Warhol's work. He used recognizable images – big, colorful, simple, popular images that I related to - Marilyn, Elvis, Elizabeth Taylor, Campbells Soup, Brillo. I liked the repetition, production-like qualities, how it related to my reality; the sense of rebellion and questioning everything.
I am strongly influenced by Andy Warhol's iconic images and my history of icons, myths, and superstitions.
Pierced copper with torch fired enamels, the image is added with a transfer technique using iron oxide pigments fired into the enamel. It is a permanent part of the piece. Five Swarovski crystal pearls dangle from the bottom of the piece on rollo chain. Includes a 26" patinaed rollo chain with handmade clasp. Also, enameled on the backside.
