Project Runway
Project Runway is a reality television series on Lifetime Television, which focuses on fashion design and is hosted by model Heidi Klum. The contestants compete with each other to create the best clothes and are restricted in time, materials and theme. Their designs are judged, and one or more designers are eliminated each week.
For several seasons now, EtsyMetal has played along with the Project Runway challenges and invites others to participate as well. Here is how it works: the day after the show airs we post a translation of the challenge on our blog. Participants have one week to make a piece and must submit it by midnight of the next Thursday, when the show airs.

Season 13, Episode 2: "Unconventional Movie Challenge" 2014
"Project Runway" Season 13, Episode 2 Air Date: 07/31/14.
In this episode, the designers' challenge was to create a look inspired by "Things you would find in a movie making & movie watching!" So for our team challenge we are going to define it and use the same materials the designers used for their runway creations, or you can use the show's theme: FILM PAPER STRAWS TICKETS ZIP TIES LETTERS (FONT) COMPACT DISCS (CDS) |
Of course, I had to go with letters. Also inspired by the movie - Jean Michel Basquiat, Radiant Child - and the artist, Paul Klee. I used 'A to Z' - letters pierced out of copper, torch-fired enamels with alphabet decals. They are big, 2" wide x 2.5" long
Season 13, Episode 1: Judges Choice 2014
Etsy Metal Project Runway Challenge is back!
Episode 1: "The Judges Decide" The Project Runway challenge: With one outfit, give the judges a glimpse of a hypothetical spring collection. Designers must choose from an assortment of 5 fabrics provided to them at the start of the challenge. The EtsyMetal Translation: Pick how ever many of these 5 ingredients below to make a piece of jewelry! RAIN BIRDS FIVE OMBRE GROWTH I picked birds. This bird necklace is inspired by the story of Demeter and Persephone from the book - Lost Goddesses of Early Greece - A Collection of Pre-hellenic Greek Myths by Charlene Spretnak. I have just learned how to use decals with enamel and on the front I have added birds or parts of birds and on the back are the words - Leaves & Vines, Flowers & Grass, Grew into Fullness, Faded into Decay, Began Again. Copper with torch-fired enamels. |
Season 11, Episode 6: Senior Fling
I had to design one for Joan Rivers! How could I resist making her a Dangerous Old Vagina Brooch
Fold formed, fused copper on a copper fallopian tube pin. Season 11, Episode 6: Senior Fling Guest judges Melissa and Joan Rivers will help out this week, as the designers create looks for senior citizens! Translation: Create a piece for one of the senior ladies from the show or better still create a piece designed for Joan Rivers! |
Season 11, Episode 4: The Ultimate Hard & Soft

This week’s challenge is a FLASHBACK CHALLENGE! Inspired by the Glade 2-in-1 scented candles, the designers will be sourcing their materials from BOTH a flower shop AND the hardware store! It’s a 2 in 1 challenge to make a cohesive line of 6 looks of “hard and soft”. The line needs to contain both flowers and hardware, but EACH look does not!
Translation: I think this one was made just for us! Design a piece of jewelry that has elements of hard AND soft... include something you'd find in a hardware store with something organic, either something like a real flower or metal that looks organic.
I enameled masonry nails to get them more organic and strung them together with red hemp.

Season 11, Episode 3: It's the Heidi Klum Challenge Dun Dun Dunnnnnnn
Heidi goes on to tell the designers that as a team, they'll be designing garments for the launch of her "very feminine and sensual" scent, "Surprise." Each team will be responsible for designing four garments for her "Surprise" TV and print ad, and two looks for a press event. After all a woman needs options, right? Or to put it in Heidi terms: "I'm a little picky"
Translation: Create a piece of jewelry for Heidi based on the design of her perfume bottle. |
Season 11, Episode 1
The designers must create a garment that shows their personalities—built with input from the rest of the designers on their teams—inspired by a view of New York City.
Translation: Design a piece of jewelry inspired by a view of New York City. You can make something that will go with one of the outfits from the show. If you do, post a picture of the outfit also. I used the NY skyline (Empire State Building) on a cold winter day for inspiration. Pierced copper with torch-fired enamel on a long long skinny chain. |
Season 10, Episode 9: It's All About Me!
Season 10, Episode 9: It's All About Me
The designers get to create their own fabric for their outfit inspired by their cultural heritage and get special home visits from their family.

I grew up in Ohio in a traditional Greek Orthodox family. My grandparents lived with us and passed down many rituals and superstitions from 'pieces of the real cross' that my grandmother would give to her son for protection when he went to war to reading the mud left in the bottom of a cup of Turkish coffee.
We'd go to bed every night and hold our small wood and metal icons, do the sign of the cross, kiss them, and then go safely to sleep. I was always fascinated with the icons and when I got older I began to think about making modern icons from old photos of my family. I combine the photo with copper and enamel and stamp part of a story from my favorite book of Greek myths, "Lost Goddesses of Early Greece, a Collection of Pre-Hellenic Myths" by Charlene Spretnak. |
Season 10, Episode 7: Oh My Lord and Taylor
Season 10, Episode 7: Oh My Lord and Taylor
To celebrate the 10th season, the designers get a chance to be part of the 10 piece Project Runway Capsule Collection at Lord & Taylor that will be sold in stores and online. They had to design a cocktail or evening dress for Lord & Taylor customers that will retail in the $200 to $300 price range. A designer from each of the other nine seasons has also created a look and the dress must fit in with the collection. The winning look will be manufactured by Lord & Taylor along with the others and sold online and at the flagship store. The dress will also be displayed in the window.
For our EtsyMetal Translation:
Design a sophisticated piece of jewelry for evening wear. Something that could go into production. You can choose one of the PR Lord and Taylor designs to complement or for inspiration, check them out here www.lordandtaylor.com/eng/CMS/PRDress_Dress.cfm
Ok, I don't think these pieces go with any of the designs from PR or any Lord and Taylor dress for that matter! But here is my piece folded, forged, and enameled and the production line!

I grew up in Youngstown, Ohio, a steel city. My collection is made for the steel town working woman! Pendant, earrings, and ring are all made from steel. The earrings and ring are also enameled on the tips, with a turquoise stone and copper pieces captured on them. The ring is textured steel with a brass 'stone setting.'

Season 10, Episode 3: Will You Be My Emmy Date?
Season 10, Episode 3: Will You Be My Emmy Date?
This week, the clients and models are 7 female contestants from past seasons. The 14 designers must create Emmy looks for them. As a twist, the partnered contestants are each assigned a different color Lexus – this color should be incorporated into their look. For our EtsyMetal Translation: Create a dramatic piece to accompany one of the designs for one of the 7 past contestants/clients to wear on the red carpet at the Emmys. You can incorporate the color of your car if you like! Include a photo of the design you are accompanying. |

Project Runway Season 9

Episode 1 “Come As You Are” The Project Runway Challenge: The designers had to use the clothes they slept in the night before plus one of their bedsheets to create a new look. They also had access to dye and trimmings.
For our EtsyMetal Translation:
Since this challenge was all about using what you have in an unexpected way, and since most of us don’t sleep in jewelry, the challenge this week is to make something only from material that is sitting on your bench! If you don’t have a bench or access to your studio, then choose another area like your desk. Since the designers got a sheet, we get some sheet metal. You are welcome to use enhancements like stones from your supplies. But the final piece should be made of a majority of your found pieces if possible
The green skirt is my 'sheet' metal, formed in my dapping block to create folds, enameled bitter green. The waist piece is from a domed copper disk that I had melted out the middle of, then enameled. The top part is from a copper tube that I had tried to squash and collapse in my vise, also enameled. Scrap 14 gauge wire holds them together and makes the legs. Some netting I had left over from texturing metal in my rolling mill creates the crinoline underskirt.

Episode 2 "My Pet Project"

The Project Runway Challenge:
In this episode, the challenge was to create an outfit using pet store supplies. They were allowed to use muslin as well, but were encouraged not to.
For our EtsyMetal Translation:
Yup, you guessed it. The EM challenge is to make a piece of jewelry using pet store supplies! Try to limit your time in the pet store to 30 minutes. You may use some metal in the piece but try to use as little as possible. Make it work! Make it work!
Apple wood chips for guinea pigs, I think, long ones have the ends painted gold, the small ones have bird seed glued to them. They are strung together with braided purple hemp. Comes with matching earrings!

Episode 3 “Go Big or Go Home”

The Project Runway Challenge:
The designers were asked to design a piece for a model on stilts for the first ever outdoor runway show.
For our EtsyMetal Translation:
Since this challenge was all about going over the top, this week make it BIG, over the top, larger and crazier than you would normally do, but still trying to keep it wearable and fashionable. Should be a fun one!
I made this from some of the leftover pet supplies from last week! I cut a large (7x6.5") hexagonal shape from birdcage liner. I painted it with encaustic waxes and added a photo and some raffia in the layers. Punched in the eyelets, hung some old enamel pieces from the bottom. I made the cording from rubber tubing and finished it with a handmade copper clasp.
Episode 4 “Design a Piece for Nina Garcia”

The Project Runway Challenge:
The designers were asked to design a day to night outfit for Nina Garcia
For our EtsyMetal Translation:
Make a piece of jewelry for Nina. There was a scene where she was going through jewelry at Marie Claire. Also she notes that she likes streamlined, modern looks. Whatever you do, don't bore Nina!
Twisted fold form leaf about 5" long, enameled white on the inside and layers and layers of chartreuse, clear, green, and black enamel on the outside. Torch fired. Stick pin.

Episode 5 “Off the Track”

The Project Runway Challenge:
The designers were asked to design a collection to go with Heidi's collection for New Balance.
For Our Etsy Metal Translation:
The challenge remains the same, make something that would work well with Heidi's sport New Balance collection.
I don't know, I just kept thinking running shoes>shoelaces...Forged copper, eyelets, shoe lace, heat patina, laquer finish inside and out.

Episode 6 “The Art of the Matter”

The Project Runway Challenge:
The designers were teamed up with kids from an arts school and asked to collaborate on a work of art and use that as inspiration for an avant garde piece..
For Our Etsy Metal Translation:
Make a an "avant garde" piece of jewelry using a work of art as your inspiration. If you have access to a child and want to collaborate on something, go for it!
I used Becky's artist, who painted a picture of space. I used the green and orange colors from the painting against a liver of sulphur black night sky background. The part that goes around the head is forged copper, with holes drilled in and orange and green enamel pieces attached to represent stars in the sky. It's blackened with LOS. The veil is made from copper wire mesh with a heat patina and a LOS trim. It ties in the back and can tighten enough to fit any head!! This may actually go better with Josh C's hooker look!

Episode 7 “The Art of the Matter”

The Project Runway Challenge:
The designers were divided into two groups of five. They were given the opportunity to create their own unique textiles and asked to create a cohesive collection.
For Our Etsy Metal Translation:
Since this challenge was about pattern and textile, our challenge is to incorporate those into a piece. Do it however you like, etching, roller printing, drawing, or just fabricate a piece that forms a pattern or texture. Make it work!
Formed corrugated copper with enamel.

Episode 8 “What Women Want”Project Runway Challenge:
In this episode, the challenge was to design a look for a client's wife/girlfriend. Our EtsyMetal Challenge Translation: Choose a look from the episode and make a piece based on what you feel the client would like to go with the garment the designer made. -or- Ask a man to describe what his wife/girlfriend would like - please provide the design specification you were given and photos of the outcome. Make it work! I had to go with Bryce's ill-fitting pink dress. The saggy wrinkles match his bad fit! Rolled, corrugated copper with enamel. |
Episode 9 “Image is Everything”
Project Runway Challenge:
In this episode, the challenge was to design a look for a member of an up and coming band, The Sheepdogs. It was a menswear challenge and an image/style challenge. Our EtsyMetal Challenge Translation: Rock And Roll!! Make a piece with music in mind. You may use The Sheepdogs for your inspiration or chose another band and make it masculine. We can make menswear too! When I think of rock and roll, I go right to Led Zeppelin. This is a copper cuff designed with Jimmy Page in mind. For their 4th album they each chose a symbol for themselves. Jimmy Page created his own 'ZOSO,' it's meaning remains a mystery! Someone yelled out at a concert 'what's it mean? Jimmy replied "Frying Tonight" My guess is he may have been high when he designed it. I pierced out the Z and S and connecting line and punched out the o's, then stamped around the border: "And if you say to me tomorrow, oh what fun it all would be. Then what's to stop us, pretty baby. But what is and what should never be." |
Episode 10 "Sew 70's "

Project Runway Challenge:
For this episode, the designers must look to the past and create a modern look inspired by 70's fashion.
Our EtsyMetal Challenge Translation:
Dig your feet into that green shag carpet and make a piece inspired by 1970's trends, style, and fashion
Charm bracelets were very popular in the 70's so this is my 2011 version of the 70's.
Forged copper wire with enamel leaf charms.

Episode 11 "This is for the Birds "

Project Runway Challenge:
For this episode, exotic birds serve as the inspiration for the L'Oreal Challenge. The designer's must really step up their game when Tim reveals that during judging they will go head-to-head with one other designer putting one in the top and one in the bottom.
Our EtsyMetal Challenge Translation:
Create a piece (or two) using the birds, Charming Cockatoo, Watchful Owl, Audacious Amazon, or Sultry Raven. You may use the color pallet of the L'Oreal Limited Edition Collection, Colors Take Flight or the birds themselves.
I had to go with the sultry raven. Ravens are a highly successful species due to their high level of intelligence, flexibility, and adaptability. Wild ravens can live more than 30 years. Their coloring is glossy black with iridescent greens and blues.
Long fold formed copper pieces enameled black and with green and blue lusters. Black Swarovsky crystal pearls, neoprene.
