Surviving 2020 - a reality series
‘Surviving 2020’ is a series of brooches created mid-2020 inspired by one crises after another. The writing is taken from actual correspondence about unemployment, home insurance, Covid-19, information about local wildfires... These are constructed pieces of stamped and enameled copper with layers of magazine pages between the copper. They are like little hard cover books telling the story of 2020.

RARE LIGHTNING STORMS
“RARE LIGHTNING STORMS FIRES SAN MATEO SANTA CLARA SANTA CRUZ” Sunday, August 16, 2020 we were experiencing a heat wave in Santa Cruz county.Temperatures were 100+ which is fairly unusual for this area. PG&E was having rolling outages because of the increased power usage. Our power was only out for about an hour. Later that evening we started experiencing continuous lightning and thunder ALL night long. I think it stopped around 5 or 6am. This was unusual too, I can probably count on one hand how many times I’ve seen lightning in Santa Cruz in the 39+ years that I’ve lived here. The next day everyone was posting pictures of all the cool lightning that they had photographed. Then all of a sudden we started hearing that the lightning had started over 500 wildfires! There was a huge one in the Santa Cruz mountains about 30 miles north of us and well there was another couple in Salinas and Carmel about 30-40 miles south of us.
